How To Take Care Of Pearls

Pearls are often associated with elegance, sophistication, and timeless beauty - think Coco Chanel, Princess Diana, and queens of various monarchies. When worn and styled aptly, pearls can go with all sorts of ensemble, from a simple, casual outfit to a formal, dinner dress.

Bought your first pearl jewelry or already have a couple in your jewelry box but you're not sure how to take care of them? We've put together 3 top tips to help you make sure your pearls last through many seasons of outfit changes, and for years to come.

1. Proper Storage

Pearls are considered to be a soft gem, having rank 2.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale and therefore can be scratched easily. Store them in something soft, separate from your other jewelry to prevent any accidental scratches.

Unlike your typical semi-precious and precious gems, pearls are organic gems and need moisture so that they don’t dry out and crack. Before you go dipping your pearls in water (it’s a no-no! see next point), you just need to store them in breathable storage such as soft-cloth pouches or a soft-lined jewelry box. Never store pearls in air-tight environment.

2. Avoid contact with water

Do not wear pearl jewelry in the shower, pool, bath or sauna. In general, pearl jewelry should never be submerged in water as water can break down a pearl’s composition, causing significant damage.

Pearls that are mounted on rings or earrings are typically glued to a post. Even if exposure to water doesn’t destroy the pearls, water can dissolve the glue over time, causing the risk of loss.

3. Wear often, but clean after use

Your natural body oil keeps your pearls moisturised, prevents drying out and maintains its lustre when worn often. However, it’s important to clean your pearls with a soft damp cloth after each wear to remove any traces of chemicals or build-up of compounds from bodycare products, perfumes, and even perspiration (!!) which can destroy the nacre of your pearls.
